4. Formula Supplementation

A woman’s breast are not fully developed at the birth of her baby. There are many physical changes that occur after the baby is born to ensure a woman will have a healthy milk supply. These changes happen with stimulation to the breast (preferably from the baby breastfeeding) and effective breastmilk removal.

Basically, your breasts are like ice makers.

An ice maker only makes ice when it is empty. Your body will make milk based on how effectively the milk is removed the first weeks after the baby is born. This means that babies need to breastfeed well and often after birth. Formula supplementation reduces the amount of time a baby breastfeeds which negatively impacts milk supply. Also, the composition of formula is such that it effects a baby’s digestive system changing the intestinal gut microflora. So formula is best reserved for cases when it is medically needed, such as if the baby has jaundice or low blood sugar and expressed breastmilk and donor milk are not available. These situations can effect a woman’s ability to produce breastmilk, so it is best to seek the help of a Lactation Consultant. Since a woman’s body learns how to make milk in the beginning, a mother who has been supplementing with formula and decides to only breastfeed with a 5 day old baby can have a completely different outcome than if that same mother called me when the baby is 3 weeks old. Moral of the story, if you find that you are supplementing with formula shortly after your baby’s arrival, and you plan to breastfeed in any capacity, contact a Lactation Consultant!
