Selfish Reason to Breastfeed #3

March 18, 2017

No Periods

Pregnancy is not for the faint of heart. Growing a small person inside of you can take its toll physically. But at least at the end of all that torture you get a brand new baby. Contrarily, most mothers will agree that a selfish perk to all that work is that you don’t have your period. A solid nine month break. Be honest, women don’t enjoy their monthly reminder that life isn’t all tamales and sunshine. What if there was a way to safely extend that oasis for your ovaries?

What woman wouldn’t want to keep that going? Breastfeeding naturally delays menstruation and ovulation. The vast majority of formula feeding moms will see their periods return within the first ten weeks. There is variation on when a breastfeeding mother’s period will return, but the period of time without it is greatly increased. Pun intended. It is not unusual for a breastfeeding mother to go months before she sees her period again. The keys to prolonging delayed menstruation and ovulation are nighttime breastfeeding, delayed introduction of solids, and no pacifier use.

I work with clients who have gone a year or more without a cycle. It is the exception to the rule for a mother exclusively breastfeeding to have her cycle sooner than 6 months. And let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to have a period free half-year?
